The renter must provide a credit card, passport and driving license. You can rent a car for around 40 - 50 BRL a day. These are just guidelines, so do check with the car hire company to clarify the cost and documentation needed.

Speed limits are in kilometres per hour, and are as follows:

  • Motorways: 120kph/75mph
  • Open Roads and Non-Populated Areas: 80kph/50mph
  • Populated Areas: 60kph/35mph

Brazilians drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Since 1st January 2005, tolls have been charged on motorways and main roads and these are payable in Euros. The rate for cars is currently 5 Euros for a one week or around 12 Euros for one month.

The problem behind Brazil's roads is the presence of potholes and animals. When driving you should be careful and aware of this, as it is the main cause of road accidents.
